Nuclear Throne is a rogue-like fast paced game created by Vlambeer. But rushing forward to claim the rewards isn’t the wisest tactic in a world that’s home to assassins posing as corpses. It obviously encourages aggression, as does the fact that Rads (XP points) must be gathered before they blink out of existence-rinsing that corridor in one fell swoop might cost you an upgrade, if you can’t mop up all the Rads in time. This transforms a bullet-hell endeavour into a question of banking shots and pinball table multikills-a lucky thwack with a wrench might clear out an entire corridor, saving you precious ammo. One dramatically increases the force with which enemy bodies are thrown by a fatal blow. The ruined wastelands of the original game’s levels are contrasted with clear sand and waters, though the cleaner scenery doesn’t stop hostile mutants from running around, like some seagull bandits.Faster movement-to esoteric mutations that suit more advanced tactics, such as being able to tunnel into walls for shelter. Yet the waters now go beyond the Oasis, with the introduction of a new beachside area.
The Oasis, a secret area in the original game for instance, is expanded with some new enemies and a whole different boss to fight in order to gain access to the area. As expected of a fan expansion, new enemies and items are introduced to Nuclear Throne while maintaining the original game’s flavor. The expansion is made by Team Te and is published under Yokin on itch.io. Today, Nuclear Throne: Territorial Expansion has come out after 2 years of work to further build on the base game.
Improved mod support is opening the way for mods like blaac’s expanded Hard Mode and TheMysticSword’s Dicey Wastelands, which brings Dicey Dungeons into Nuclear Throne. Nuclear Throne Together, a mod by YellowAfterlife, enabled online co-op and more open mod support for the game.
While official development on the game seems to be over (besides a Switch port that popped up a few months ago), the game has a somewhat healthy modding scene. Nuclear Throne is a well-known roguelike shooter made by Vlambeer that stands along the likes of Enter the Gungeon and the Binding of Isaac.
